The convenience store was crowded as the sweat-soaked landscape crew gathered around the drink machine. The hot Florida sun had taken a toll on the men, and they were enjoying a brief reprieve. They were waiting in line to fill their cups with an ice-cold drink that would quench their thirst. One of the crew members asked, “Are there free refills?” The clerk replied that the special had expired and there were no more free refills.
Even though that convenience store no longer gave free refills I am so glad that Jesus does. Salvation is a once for all transaction that Christ purchased for us with His own blood on the cross. When we genuinely trust Him as our personal Savior our salvation is eternally secure. We drink of the Living Water. But because of that one purchase we are allowed free refills of all that our Lord has given us in Him. In John 4:14 Jesus promised the woman at the well living water. Jesus told her: “But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” “Whoever drinks” is in the present tense indicating continuous action. Salvation comes with one drink, but satisfaction comes as we continually drink of Jesus. Many believers who have trusted Christ as Savior in the past may sense a dryness in their soul from time to time. Perhaps that is just the time they need to come back to the well for a free refill of the living water.
All of God’s children need to have a free refill of forgiveness for our frequent and shameful sins. Sometimes our cold heartedness cries out for a refill of His love. Our empty and fruitless activities for the Lord stand in desperate need of a free refill of His Holy Spirit. Who doesn’t need more of His joy, a greater sense of His presence, and a fresh refill of our faith that will clear away all our doubts? Jesus offers us living water. And I am so glad it comes with free refills.
